The Guardian has a really good series of articles about the ways the uses of AI in welfare systems and surveillance are harming poor people worldwide. Virginia Eubanks is referenced in at least one of the articles, and the series talks about welfare systems in the UK, Australia, and India.
And, relatedly, Philip Alston the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty is presenting a report at the UN General Assembly tomorrow about the digital welfare state. There’s a link to the advance version of the report in this press release, entitled “World stumbling zombie-like into a digital welfare dystopia, warns UN human rights expert.”
