Maryland to limit police use of genealogy websites

Amazing! I would have never considered law enforcement using a genealogy site to get DNA to link someone to a crime. I’m sure most of our customers don’t think about that either.

Great to see that Maryland is putting some guardrails around these databases, but it’s alarming to be reminded of just how much reach the police have. At this point, if there’s data being collected in any form anywhere, we have to assume that police can get their hands on it.

That’s why data minimization is so important as a guiding principle in our work. Do we REALLY need to keep that record? Is it important enough to keep that we’re okay with police getting access to it?

And I’ve started this week’s readings and am seeing how much work remains to be done in this area. Yikes!
