Protecting Whistle-Blowers

Some of you may be aware that Reality Winner just accepted a draconian plea deal for her whistle-blowing about Russian election meddling. What I find disturbing is the lack of news covering this, and particularly that no news media at all seem to want to discuss the surveillance methods that got her caught. There needs to be more widespread knowledge about hidden marks left by photocopy machines and computer printers that can be used to trace documents back to whistle-blowers or human rights activists.

Yes indeed, and how in this case, the security guidelines offered by The Intercept and other news organizations didn’t mention those issues, nor did the journalists scrub the docs so that that metadata would be gone. She made some other errors in her opsec that had nothing to do with the journalists who she leaked to, but they certainly didn’t help the situation.
